Experience over the last 17 years has enabled HFHB to first identify and then define appropriate responses to the housing needs of different groups comprising Botswana society. HFHB is significantly contributing to developing and building communities in the country.
The capacity of local people to effectively manage community-based organisations has been raised through training and support initiatives. Other intangible benefits to the poor have been realized by leveraging tremendous local and international support through the teamwork of volunteers and through the sense of individual achievement, which forms around these causes. In the past, HFHB went in partnership with the Vice President’s Office and the Serowe North Development Trust (SNDT) and built 18 houses for the destitute. HFHB just closed a partnership with the Office of the President and United Nation High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), where 190 refugee families were provided with secure, healthy homes.
HFHB initiated a partnership project with the diamond mining company – Debswana, Jwaneng mine. The partnership exists to provide decent housing to those dwelling around the mining area. Currently the project is operating in three settlements around Jwaneng and has served over 200 people, having completed over 50 houses (50 families; 4 people per family). This is through home improvement or extending existing structures and building new houses.
The partnership between this world's leading diamond producer by value alone, (Debswana) and the recognized global leader in poverty housing solutions (HFH), is geared towards transforming the lives of low-income families in a highly sustainable and visible manner.
Debswana has already contributed P800, 000.00 ($134,000.00) towards building and improving houses in the three areas. This is a three year project broken down into 3 phases. The project aims at serving 120 families in need of decent housing in the Jwaneng mine area.
