Habitat for Humanity Botswana began in 1991. The former President of Botswana, Sir Ketumile J. Masire, heard of Habitat for Humanity at an Organisation of African Unity during a meeting in Addis Ababa from former President of the United States of America, Jimmy Carter. President Masire was so pleased with what he learned that he invited Habitat for Humanity to come to Botswana.
Two International Partners were sent to develop a National Program in Botswana. They started in Kanye where a National Steering Committee was formed of people from different walks of life who were interested in Habitat for Humanity's mission and completed the National Habitat for Humanity proposal for the International Office.
They were officially recognized by the International Office in 1992. It was also during 1992 that they applied for and received their Certificate of Incorporation from the Botswana government. HFHB began in four areas of the country after finding the necessary commitment to the Habitat for Humanity philosophy in those areas: Ghanzi, Francistown, Kanye, and Kasane. During the initial training of the Affiliate Managers of these areas, the first show house was built in Kanye. In 1996, the National Office moved from Kanye to Gaborone.
From these four communities, four additional communities started: D'Kar, Gasita, Kavimba, and Serule. Serowe is the 9th community added to the HFHB program. They are the first affiliate to fundraise for their first house and managed to actually raise funds for 30 houses. Three new affiliates were added early 2001: Chadibe, Tshimoyapula & Matlhako. Mahalapye was added in February 2002, Mokubilo and Letlhakane in 2004, Machaneng in 2005 and Mmaphashalala in 2006. We established two projects in Sefhare and Jwaneng Hub project in 2007, while Molepolole was approved in 2008.
As of September 2008, HFHB has built 1746 houses which means, 1746 families served or roughly 6,984 people have experienced living in decent, affordable, and durable shelter.
